The incidence of back pain causes limitations, disability and decreased quality of life in people's lives, configuring a public health problem. Most of the individuals who suffer from chronic back pain have emotional problems like depression, anxiety and hopelessness. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the perception of pain intensity, identify the disability related activities of daily living and depression levels in people with chronic low back pain and correlate pain intensity pain, depression and disability. This is a transversal study descriptive exploratory performed in a pain clinic of a university hospital in an inner city in the state of São Paulo, after approval of the Ethics Committee of the Nursing School of Ribeirão Preto – USP, protocol 1358/2011. The instruments used were: Numeric Rating Scale (0-10 points) for assessing perceived pain intensity, the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (0-24 points) and the Beck Depression Inventory (0-63 points). Results: The study included 60 people with chronic back pain. The mean pain intensity was 7.38, the mean disability was 19.87 and the level of depression was 24.98. The results show that the subjects presented high intensity of pain and disability, corroborating findings from other research. The correlation between pain intensity and disability and between pain intensity and depression was positive weak correlation between disability and depression was positive moderate. When considering complexity of this phenomenon, we consider appropriate to know the interrelated variables in order to provide adequate management of chronic low back pain.
