    The Comparison of Effects of Intraarticular Steroid Versus Nonsteroid Tenoxicam Injections in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis

    Introduction: The effectiveness of application of intraarticular (IA) steroid versus tenoxicam, nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drug for patients with knee osteoarthritis is compared by various pain and physical activity assessment tests before and after treatment during a period of six months. Methods: Two hundred patients were enrolled in a prospective, randomized study after Ethical Committee approval. In Group 1 (n=100), IA triamcinolone at dose of 40 mg and in Group 2 (n=100), IA tenoxicam at dose of 20 mg was administered to patients. Pain and physical activity were assessed using (VAS), WOMAC and Laquesne tests before treatment, first week, first, third and sixth months after treatment. Student's t and Friedman tests were used. Results: Lower VAS scores in Group 1 was observed in comparison to Group 2 in the first week and first month after treatment (p<0.001). Lower WOMAC pain, stiffness, physical function and Laquesne index scores were observed in Group 1 in comparison to Group 2 in the first week after treatment (p<0.001). No differences were observed in other follow-up visits (p>0.05). Discussion and Conclusion: In patients with knee osteoarthritis, application of IA corticosteroid or nonsteroid anti-inflammatory therapies decrease pain intensity and increase physical activity within one week after treatment and this effect continues for a six months of duration.
