  • AAPM President Announces New Mission Statement

On April 11, 2018, AAPM President, Steven Stanos, DO, shared the following announcement about the Academy’s new mission statement with members. Learn more about AAPM, including the Academy’s mission and vision.

    Dear AAPM Colleagues,

It has been an honor to serve as President of our Academy for the past year. During that time, we have made significant progress toward AAPM’s primary goal: serving members and their communities.

As part of AAPM’s ongoing strategic planning process, AAPM members have been surveyed on several occasions throughout the past 18 months. You’ve told us what is important to you and what your most immediate needs are based on the realities of practicing pain medicine in today’s environment.

Based on this feedback and as a step toward completing our 2019-21 strategic plan, AAPM has adapted its mission statement to ensure that the Academy is best positioned to continue its work of supporting and advocating for its members.

Today I’m happy to announce the Academy’s new mission statement:

To advance and promote the full spectrum of multidisciplinary pain care, education, advocacy, and research to improve function and quality of life for people in pain.

I look forward to working with the entire AAPM community, and especially our incoming President, Jianguo Cheng, MD PhD, to enact this mission.

This is an extraordinary time in the field of pain medicine. I am confident that the strategic planning efforts taking place this year – including adoption of this new mission statement and the conversations that will take place during the April 28 Town Hall – will point us in the right direction as we continue shaping the field of pain medicine for years to come. As it has for the past 35 years, AAPM will continue its work to promote pain medicine, advance training for pain physicians and their team members, and address the public health issue of pain.

    Thank you,

    Steven P. Stanos, DO
President, American Academy of Pain Medicine
