    a Performance-Improvement (PI) CME Activity

This AAPM Performance-Improvement Activity is an extension of the 2-day February 2012 Safe Opioid Prescribing course in Palm Springs, California, and one part of the larger AAPM initiative to reverse the trend of overdose deaths and improve care for chronic pain patients. The overall goal of this innovative, practice-based activity is to promote patient safety in pain care. This AAPM program, which carries the potential for 20 additional CME credits, is intended to support clinicians as they implement safe opioid prescribing practices on-the-ground in their daily practice of medicine.

What follows here is a brief overview of the Patient-Centered Quality Pain Care Initiative.

For PI-CME participants, an online portal has been set up to facilitate this activity.

Participants: A small cohort of clinicians from among those who attended the February 2012 AAPM Safe Opioid Prescribing course.

Content: Depending on their areas of interest and educational needs, clinicians may choose up to two of the following modules. Each is accredited for 10 credits of CME.

    • Module I: Improving Performance: Qualified Risk Assessments and Evaluation
    • Module II: Improving Performance: Initiating, Modifying, and Discontinuing Opioid Therapy
    • Module III: Improving Performance: Monitoring and Maintenance Strategies

At the start of the activity, each clinician will evaluate his or her current practices, compare them to AAPM recommended practices, and construct a plan to improve performance in a few targeted areas. Monthly teleconferences, readings, and process improvement exercises will aid clinicians as they seek to attain the goals put forward in that plan. Clinicians will complete another assessment of his or her current safe prescribing practices at the conclusion of this activity and gauge the progress they have made.

Launch date: With a June 26 deadline for submitting commitment forms, the PI-CME activity will begin in early August and continue through the end of the calendar year.
