Member Committees

AAPM remains progressive in the practice of pain medicine through the consistent input from its members. Serving on AAPM committees also gives you the opportunity to interface with other physicians in many other specialty areas. Listed below are a few of the committees you may want to consider participating in:

Descriptions of AAPM Committees

Annual Meeting Program Committee

  • Plan the curriculum and advise on the structure of the Annual Meeting, which includes reviewing evaluations from the previous year’s meeting, identifying the comprehensive educational needs of pain physicians, determining plenary topics, evaluating and selecting submissions from the Call for Proposals, and recruiting faculty.

Awards Committee

  • Select individuals or groups who have made outstanding contributions in the field of Pain Medicine to receive awards.
  • Develop ideas for new awards, as appropriate, for Board consideration.

Business Oversight Committee

  • Review and make recommendations to the Board of Directors relating to the business operations of AAPM.

Bylaws Committee

  • Review and recommend changes to the Bylaws as necessary.

CME Oversight Committee

  • Ensure that all AAPM sponsored educational programming complies with ACCME Essential Areas and Standards for Commercial Support.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of the overall continuing education program.

Commercially Supported Satellite Symposia Committee
Subcommittee of the Annual Meeting Program Committee

  • Review proposals for independent, commercially supported symposia and select appropriate programs in accordance with the content and purpose of the Annual Meeting.

Communications Committee

  • Develop media relationships and help disseminate information about AAPM’s messages and activities.

Coding & Reimbursement Committee (CRC)

  • Accurately describe the procedures used in Pain Medicine for the CPT coding process.
  • Survey and recommend relative values to the AMA RUC Committee in its advisory role to CMS.
  • Increase awareness by the RUC Committee of the unique practice and procedural issues facing Pain Medicine physicians.

Educational Programs Committee

  • Identify and evaluate continuing professional development needs of AAPM members.
  • Formulate AAPM’s continuing education goals and priorities.
  • Make recommendations to the board regarding new education initiatives, online learning strategies and other ways to expand funding for the outreach of AAPM volunteers as experts in the field of Pain Medicine.

Ethics Council

  • Pursue the analysis of specific clinical situations that present ethical issues in Pain Medicine and publicize them.
  • Establish and pursue lines of consensus on “Ethics in Pain” by soliciting common work/agreement/documentation with other pain organizations.

External Affairs Committee

  • Composed of AAPM member physicians with identified affiliations with strategically identified organizations.
  • Advance outreach efforts to selected medical organizations, consumer groups, media outlets, and other organizations.

Finance Committee
Note: The composition of this committee is prescribed by the AAPM Bylaws.

  • Develop and monitor the finances of the Academy, both operating and reserve funds.
  • Work with the AAPM staff to develop the annual budget for approval by the Board.
  • Provide oversight of the Academy’s investments, including the selection of an external financial advisor as appropriate, in conjunction with the board and staff.

Legislative and Regulatory Affairs Committee

  • Develop AAPM policy and an action plan for the execution of strategies to achieve the goals and interests of the members as they relate to the affairs of the federal and state governments and the public sector at large.
  • Monitor, through its consultants and advisors, the federal and state events that have relevance and that impact on the treatment of pain.

Local Initiatives Committee

  • Establish a representative in each state to inform the rest of the Academy of challenges and opportunities at the state level.
  • Affect political change through grassroots activism and close contact with lawmakers.
  • Connect local pain communities.
  • Increase the political strength of AAPM

Medical School Curriculum Committee
Subcommittee of the Educational Programs Committee

  • Complete peer-review of Pain Medicine curricula for medical schools.
  • Recommend curricula for approval to the Educational Programs Committee which may subsequently recommend it to the Board of Directors.
  • Following peer-review and approval process, submit curricula for posting on AAMC MedPortal.

Membership Committee

  • Develop and implement strategic marketing plans for recruiting and retaining members.
  • Recommend membership policy to the Board of Directors.
  • Conduct periodic needs assessments of the members.

Nominating Committee
Note:
The composition of this committee is prescribed by the AAPM Bylaws.

  • Secure candidates for all available positions on the Board of Directors and Nominating Committee and present a slate of qualified candidates to the membership for a vote.

Research

  • Investigate and identify opportunities for the Academy to invest, support, or participate in research initiatives.
  • Enhance scientific quality of the Annual Meeting.
  • Collaborate with other organizations on research or scientific initiatives and programs.
  • Review nominations for Scientific Membership and recommend eligible candidates to the Board for approval.

Scientific Poster Abstract Committee
Subcommittee of the Annual Meeting Program Committee

  • Solicit, evaluate, rank, and judge Scientific Poster Abstract Submissions.  

Scientific Review and Guidelines Committee

  • Review and make recommendations on guidelines and other scientific matters presented to the Academy for consideration (position papers, consensus statements, etc.).
  • Inventory current available practice parameters and guidelines in relation to pain.
  • Develop criterion-based standards for guidelines to guide committee activities.
  • Actively engage other organizations to participate or partner in activities related to practice parameters and guidelines.

Site Selection

  • Select the Annual Meeting site, which is rotated among the various regions of the country.
  • Work with Board and staff to develop a long-term plan for meeting sites.

Strategic Planning

  • Review on a continuing basis the long-range directions, needs, and policies of the organization.
  • Make recommendations to the Board on implementing the Strategic Plan.
