Physician
Physicians holding an MD or DO degree conferred by an accredited medical school in the United States or Canada, as well as individuals who hold an international degree found by the Membership Committee to be equivalent.
- Eligible to vote on Academy matters
- Eligible to hold office, chair, or serve on committees
This includes physicians across specialties who diagnose, treat, or study pain.
Non-Physician Clinician/Scientist
Non-physician professionals in the United States or Canada engaged in clinical practice or research related to pain medicine, including those who are licensed, registered, or certified in a healthcare profession that treats patients with pain, as well as individuals engaged in academic, research, or equivalent roles where such licensure is not required.
- Eligible to vote on Academy matters
- Eligible to chair and serve on committees
- May be elected to the Doctoral (Non-Physician) Director position if they hold a doctoral-level degree
This includes, but is not limited to, psychologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physical therapists, pharmacists, researchers, and other professionals engaged in the treatment or study of pain.
Early Career Physician
Physicians holding an MD or DO degree conferred by an accredited medical school in the United States or Canada, as well as individuals who hold an international degree found by the Membership Committee to be equivalent, who have completed fellowship training and are within their first three (3) years as an attending physician.
- Eligible to vote on Academy matters
- Eligible to hold office, chair, or serve on committees
Fellow Physician
Physicians who have completed residency training and are currently enrolled in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited pain medicine fellowship program, or an equivalent program as determined by the Board of Directors.
- Eligible to vote on Academy matters
- Eligible to hold office, chair, or serve on committees
Resident PGY 1
Physicians who are currently enrolled in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited training program that provides substantial training in pain medicine, as determined by the Board of Directors.
- Eligible to vote in elections
- Eligible to chair and serve on committees
- Not eligible to hold office
Resident PGY 2
Physicians who are currently enrolled in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited training program that provides substantial training in pain medicine, as determined by the Board of Directors.

- Not eligible to hold office
Resident PGY 3
Physicians who are currently enrolled in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited training program that provides substantial training in pain medicine, as determined by the Board of Directors.

Resident PGY 4
Physicians who are currently enrolled in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited training program that provides substantial training in pain medicine, as determined by the Board of Directors.

Resident PGY 5+
Physicians who are currently enrolled in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited training program that provides substantial training in pain medicine, as determined by the Board of Directors.

- Not eligible to hold office
Student
Students enrolled and in good standing in an accredited graduate-level healthcare program related to pain care.
- Not eligible to vote
- Eligible to serve on committees
- Not eligible to chair committees or hold office
This includes, but is not limited to, medical students, nursing students, physician assistant students, pharmacy students, psychology trainees, physical therapy students, and other healthcare-related graduate programs.
Industry
Professionals in the United States or Canada directly employed by industry and involved in clinical and technical activities, education, research, engineering, and/or corporate leadership, whose careers demonstrate a commitment to pain medicine.
- Not eligible to vote, hold office, or chair committees
- May serve on the Corporate Relations Council or task forces in collaboration with Physician members, upon Board approval
International
Physicians practicing outside the United States or Canada who have a valid license to practice medicine in their country of origin and spend a significant portion of their professional activities in pain medicine or related disciplines.
- Not eligible to vote or hold office
- May participate only in an advisory capacity to committees
Senior Physician
Physicians who are retiring or retired, are age 68 or older, and have at least 10 years of AAPM membership.
- Eligible to vote on Academy matters
- Not eligible to hold office
- Eligible to serve on committees
