The mission of the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) Foundation is to eliminate pain as a significant public health issue by advancing provider education, supporting groundbreaking research, and ensuring patient access to individualized, comprehensive, and evidence-based pain care.

In collaboration with other leading organizations, the Foundation aims to bolster AAPM’s core goal:  optimizing the health of patients in pain and eradicating pain as a major health problem through the advancement of pain medicine and access for all.

American Academy of Pain Medicine Consensus Guidelines on Neuromodulation Technologies and Neurocomputer Interfaces for Pain Management and Functional Recovery

The AAPM Foundation’s new Consensus Guidelines on Neuromodulation Technologies and Neurocomputer Interfaces for Pain Management and Functional Recovery are now available in Pain Medicine. Developed by an expert panel convened by the Foundation, the guideline provides an evidence-based framework for using neuromodulation technologies—including peripheral nerve stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, brain-computer interfaces, virtual and augmented reality, and other emerging approaches—to support functional recovery and relieve pain. The work reflects the Foundation’s commitment to advancing rigorous evidence, clinician education, and better outcomes for people living with pain. Beginning in October, AAPM will offer education designed to help pain medicine professionals understand the recommendations and translate the guideline into clinical practice. Mainstay Medical, AppliedVR, and H-Wave have provided unrestricted grants for the manuscript development.

Recent Projects:

• FDA Grant for Management of Acute Low Back Pain. AAPM is a sub-grantee collaborating with Oregon Health and Science University. The project runs from 2023 – 2026
• Topical Analgesics for Neuropathic Pain – The AAPM Foundation published a guideline for t[opical analgesics for neuropathic pain management](https://bit.ly/4c5kKSp). This involves reviewing existing literature, consulting experts, and developing an evidence-based guideline. It is available via open access in Pain Medicine Journal. The aim is to improve pain management practices and patient outcomes. Enduring CME content was created to support the guideline and is available HERE.
