June Member Focus: Salman Hirani, MD
This June, AAPM is proud to spotlight Dr. Salman Hirani, a physician entrepreneur, researcher, and pain medicine specialist whose vision and leadership have helped foster innovation across the Academy and the broader healthcare landscape.
Dr. Hirani serves as an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), where his work focuses on cancer pain medicine, interventional spine procedures, and the implementation of innovative technologies to improve patient care. His clinical expertise includes minimally invasive treatments for spine and musculoskeletal conditions, helping patients achieve better outcomes through evidence-based, patient-centered care.
Innovation has been a defining theme throughout Dr. Hirani’s career. Within AAPM, he played a key role in launching the Innovation Challenge, creating a platform for clinicians, entrepreneurs, and innovators to collaborate on solutions that address some of the biggest challenges facing pain medicine. He also helped establish AAPM as the first specialty society to partner with the American Medical Association to host a Physician Innovation Network In Real Life (PIN IRL) event, bringing together physicians, startups, investors, and industry leaders to accelerate healthcare innovation.
In addition to his innovation efforts, Dr. Hirani has served AAPM in numerous leadership roles, including Director-at-Large on the Board of Directors and Co-Chair of the Annual Meeting Planning Committee. Through these contributions, he has helped shape educational programming, strategic initiatives, and opportunities for member engagement across the Academy.
His accomplishments extend beyond medicine. As a past Grand Prize winner of MIT Hacking Medicine’s Grand Hack, Dr. Hirani has demonstrated a passion for identifying creative solutions that improve access to care and reduce health disparities. His research interests in implementation science and healthcare innovation continue to focus on bringing meaningful change to underserved populations.
Whether developing new technologies, advancing pain medicine research, or creating opportunities for collaboration and innovation within AAPM, Dr. Hirani exemplifies the forward-thinking leadership that continues to advance the field.
